At least 119 killed, numerous establishments vandalised, torched

The country witnessed bloody clashes and widespread violence on the day of the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on Monday, claiming the lives of at least 119 people and vandalism and torching of numerous establishments, including Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, official residence and office of the prime minister and residences of ministers and MPs.
Of them, 71 was killed in various areas of the capital while the remaining deaths were reported from Jashore, Habiganj, Barishal, Kushtia and some other districts as of 10pm.
Those died in capital include Rasel, 28, of Jatrabari, Rakib Hossain, 24, a student of Southeast University, Abdur Rahman, 22, a student of Govt Tolaram College, Saiful Islam Tonmoy, 22, Abu Ishak, 52, an expatriate, Azmat, 40, and Manik Mia, 27.
A source at the DMCH said the hospital received 41 bodies till the evening while another source said about 60 people were killed in the capital alone. But the Daily Sun could not verify the information indecently.
The deaths in the capital took place as law enforcers and Awami League men were locked in conflicts with the protesters and miscreants carried out arson attacks and vandalism at various establishments, including police stations, after the government's fall.
Twelve people were killed and 24 others injured in Jashore as miscreants torched Jabir International Hotel owned by district Awami League General Secretary and immediate past MP Shahin Chakladar.
The injured were admitted to Jashore General Hospital, said its superintendent.
In Habiganj, six people were killed and 50 others injured during a clash at Baniachong, confirmed Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Shamima Akhter.
The deceased are Hasan, 12, son of Sanu Mia of Jatrapasha, Ashraful, 17, son of Nur Mia of Maizer Moholla village, Mozakkir, 40, son of Shomsher Mia of Paragaon, Noyon, 18, of Kamalkani village, Tofazzal, 18, son of Abdur Rouf of Jatkornapara and Sadikur, 30, of Purbaghar village.
Locals said the students and common people brought out a procession near LR High School.
Police obstructed them when they marched forward. At one point, police opened fire on the demonstrators, leaving three dead on the spot. The three other injured succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Later, the agitating people set Baniachong Police Station on fire.
Of the injured, five were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
In Kushtia, at least six people were shot dead and hundreds injured in clashes between protesters and police.
Four of the deceased were identified as Yusuf Ali, 70, of Thanapara, Abdullah, 13, son of Lokman, Babu, 40, son of Nawsher Ali from Haripur and Ashraf, 42, son of Kafiluddin.
Eyewitnesses said protesters clashed with police at the Mojompur Gate in Kushtia around 12:30pm when police lobbed teargas canisters and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
In Manikganj, Taibur Rahman Tipu, the organising secretary of the district unit of Awami League, succumbed to his injuries at the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital in the capital on Monday morning.
He suffered injuries in a clash between the demonstrators and the BCL men in the district the previous day.
In Gazipur, Tofazzal Hossain, 22, a worker, was killed during a clash that ensued between the students and Awami League men on Sunday night, confirmed Sreepur Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Pronoy Bhushon Das.
In Gaibandha, about 200 people were injured as the protesters and police were locked in several clashes at different parts of the district, said ASP Abdullah Al Mamun.
In Narayanganj, a clash took place between BCL men and law enforcers and protesters at Chashara at noon, leaving at least 20 people injured. Of them, six sustained bullet wounds.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters gathered at the Shaheed Minar in Chashara at about 11am. They put a barricade on the road and staged demonstrations.
After half an hour, the BCL activists chased the demonstrators and blasted 8-10 crude bombs.
Later, the demonstrators carried out a counter-attack, resulting in a chase and counter-chase.
After that, police first lobbed teargas canisters and fired pellets of shotguns, which left 20 people wounded.
Widespread vandalism took place across the country when Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, official residence and office of the prime minister, houses former ministers, state ministers, lawmakers and public representatives of different tiers were ransacked and torched.
Besides, police stations, the headquarters of the police and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, circuit houses in different districts and key administrative buildings were attacked.
Agitated people set on fire different police stations, including Vatara, Badda, Jatrabari and New Market, and media outlets, including ATN News, Ekattor TV, Gaan Bangla TV and Khoborer Kagoj.
According to media reports, agitated people vandalised and torched houses of several former ministers, including Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in Dhanmondi, LGRD Minister Tazul Islam in Cumilla, Sadhon Chandara in Naogaon, state minister for expatriates’ welfare and overseas Shofiqur Rahman Choudhury in Sylhet.
In Rajashahi, the head office of Rajshahi City Corporation, headquarters of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Political Office of Rajshahi Mayor were vandalised and torched.
The Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi-32, AL president’s Dhanmondi political office were also vandalised and torched.
Thousands of people stormed Ganabhaban, the official residence of the country’s prime minister. After Hasina fled to safer location, jubilant people found its entrance wide open and swarmed into it without any security check. Many of them were seen taking away various things from the residence.
Protesters also vandalised the residence of the chief justice. A number of people were seen climbing the boundary wall of the chief justice's residence at Hare Road.
The AL central office on 23 Bangabandhu Avenue was attacked around 3:00pm. An eyewitness said the agitators entered the central office and vandalised it. They climbed up from the ground floor to the seventh floor and vandalised and set fire to it.
Some AL leaders and activists were staying at the central office from Monday morning to noon. After understanding the situation, they left the place.
Protesters also set fire to AL Dhaka district office at Tejgaon in the capital in the afternoon.
