The nine coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on Channel 24 spoke for the first time after the fall of the Awami League government in the face of mass protests.
Nahid Islam, a coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, said the uprising was initiated by the students and the public. An outline of the interim government will be presented to the nation through discussions with students, civil society representatives, and political leaders. No fascists can be in such a government.
The Awami League government fell on Monday following the student-led anti-discrimination movement. Awami League President Sheikh Hasina resigned as the prime minister and left the country. That evening, the nine coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, including Nahid Islam, spoke on
the private television channel. Nahid Islam underscored the coordinators’ desire to change Bangladesh’s overall system and establish a structure preventing the rise of any fascist, dictator, or another Sheikh Hasina.
Asif Mahmud, another coordinator, announced a press conference at 8pm at the SAARC Fountain in Karwan Bazar where they will present an outline for the interim government, inviting acceptable individuals to participate.
In response to a question, Asif Mahmud said they believed victory was certain from the beginning and will remain in the streets until all demands are met.
After the fall of the Awami League government, Nahid Islam and the coordinators addressed the nation on television. They demanded the release of all political leaders and activists imprisoned in the last 16 years and the trial of all political killings.
The coordinators aim for a new political settlement, rebuilding everything and gifting the nation with fair and impartial elections.
Sarjis Alam, another coordinator, credited the movement’s success to the people of Bangladesh. He acknowledged that the movement would not have been successful without the public’s participation, despite clashes at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Changkharpool area in the morning.
Nahid Islam urged students to ensure no one exploits the situation to vandalize and loot state institutions, emphasising the protection of state wealth and peaceful conduct until the final announcement.
