A government agency on Sunday issued an order to block access to popular social media platforms, like Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram, on ground-based internet after authorities suspended mobile internet services.

Broadband users claimed they could not access the aforementioned social media platforms from Sunday noon, while mobile internet was found to be completely suspended.

However, at 2.30pm, ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak told reporters that the government has imposed no restriction on internet services.

He acknowledged that the services were disrupted in some places, but attributed the disruptions to attacks on internet infrastructure by alleged “terrorists.”

“Attacks on internet services are going on at various spots. Fibre optical cables are being cut. Even today, many of our installations were set ablaze,” he said without providing evidence.
