Khulna city police on Friday afternoon fired tear gas shells at students protesting against killings during the recent quota reform movement, leading to a chase and counter-chase.
Around 3:15pm, a huge number of students reached the Gollamari area of the city only to face tear shell canisters fired by police.
The students responded by throwing brick chips, resulting in a chase and counter-chase.
As another huge group of students reached the spot, police slowly retreated, allowing students to occupy the city’s Zero Point.
However, clashes resumed about an hour later, when police again tried to disperse the demonstrators. About an hour later, students were still occupying the Zero Point, and alleged that police continued firing tear shells and rubber bullets at them from the Rupsa Bridge Bypass Road.
