Bangladesh umpire Sathira Jakir said on Thursday that she faced greater pressure in Dhaka Premier League matches compared to the India-Pakistan or the Women’s Asia Cup final.
“I still feel that I have faced greater pressure in matches in the Dhaka Premier League compared to the India-Pakistan or the Asia Cup final. That is why I enjoyed the matches and didn't feel pressure,” said Sathira, adding that Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur praised her decision in the final against Sri Lanka despite it went against them.
“There was a leg-before appeal against Chamari Athapaththu in the fourth or fifth over. The way the Indian players appealed, it appeared that they felt I had denied them a hundred per cent out decision. Harmanpreet [Kaur] came and asked why I didn't give out and I immediately replied that it had pitched outside leg stump,” she said.
“Maybe she did not accept my decision well and at that instant we both looked at the giant screen. It showed that the ball pitched quite a bit outside the leg-stump line. She then came and said ‘very good decision mam’,” she said.
“The review I got was really good, especially if I say about the match referees they give instant feedback and a Sri Lankan (umpire) was present there and Indian GS Laxmi was also a match referee, she after first match came up to me and said that Jessy I knew you were good, but I didn’t expect you to be so good.
“So she found me better than what she expected. And by the grace of Allah there was no error in any matches.
“I reached till here, and there is a huge part that you guys played to bring me here. You guys supported us from the beginning and that’s why today Bangladeshi women umpires could come this far and had the courage to do well. There is something that is always in the back of my mind, I know I will have to do good for myself, but also when I know everyone is looking at me, the pressure rises, the responsibility increases and because of that I feel that I will have to do even better and overall I could show good performance,” she said.
Sathira said that she is hopeful of her chances of umpiring in the upcoming women's T20 World Cup in October.
"I am hopeful and that's the dream. BCB are hopeful too and they have talked to ICC. Until something has been confirmed, it's difficult to comment on it," she concluded.
