Students of all dormitories of Rajshahi University have been staging sit-in in front of the vice-chancellor's residence against the notice asking them to leave the halls.
An emergency syndicate meeting of the university on Tuesday night asked the students to vacate the dormitories by 12:00 pm on Wednesday.
The residential students of Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall locked the hall gate and prevented everyone from leaving the hall. They also confined the hall provost into the hall, demanding their hall to be free from politics.
Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall Provost Prof Jahangir Alam said, "Although I want student politics to be banned, everything is not in my hands. I can make a decision after talking to the residential teachers.”
Students have locked several female dormitories including Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hall and they are staying inside the hall.
RU Proctor Asabul Haque said, "There are instructions from the government to ensure the security of residential halls. In that case, we will lock the halls for security.”
