University students around 4pm today enforced a blockade on six key transportation points in the capital including the intersections of Shahbagh, Fakirapool and hotel InterContinental near the University of Dhaka and roads near the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University of Agargaon.
Earlier, students from Dhaka College and Eden College imposed blockades on the capital’s Science Lab intersection and Nilkhet intersection.
They have announced the movement would continue till 8pm and 9pm. As part of their plans for the capital on Sunday, two more crucial roads are expected to be blocked including one at Mohakhali by students of the area’s Titumir College.
The blockade announced a day earlier was imposed on a number of other key roads and highways across the country. Sunday was the seventh straight day university students took to the streets and blocked at least one crucial transportation point in the country.
Like in previous days police took position at the expected blockade points, but did not attempt to interrupt the demonstrations.
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) members gathered in front the Madhur Canteen but did not stop the students marching towards Shahbagh.
On Sunday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police held a press briefing urging commuters to leave their homes and offices earlier than usual to avoid potential traffic gridlocks caused by the student movement and a Hindu festival.
During the blockade in the capital, the procession for Hindu community’s Rath Jatra festival would be allowed to move along its route from Iskcon Temple in Shamibagh to Dhakeshwari Temple in Bakshi Bazar via Shapla Chattar and Gulistan.
