India to host BIMSTEC foreign ministers meeting on 11 July
Bangladesh FM will fly from China to attend, situation of Myanmar may dominate

India is hosting a meeting of Foreign Ministers of BIMSTEC countries on 11th july in Newdelhi. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud will attend the meeting coming from China. Dr Mahumud will be in China with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina .The meeting is a preparatory meeting for the upcoming SIXTH summit of the Bay of Bengal Intiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperaton(BIMSTECH) scheduled to be held in Thailand in Sepember 2024.It is expected all the heads of government are to attend the summit. There will be a chance meeting between External affairs minister Dr S Jayshankar and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Mahmud at the sideline. The situation of Myanmar may dominate this time as the country in undergoing into a serious civil war which impacting both India and Bangladesh.
Thailand is currently Chair of BIMSTEC aspiring to propel the region towards a " prosperous ,Resilient and Open BIMSTECH " or "pro bimstech " by 2030. The last Foreign Ministers meeting of the BIMSTEC countries was held in Bangkok where Both Indian Foreign Minister Dr S Jayshankar and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen attended. This will be the first meeting of newly appointed Foreign Minister of Bangladesh after the general election.
BIMSTEC is a technical and economic cooperation framework ,comprising seven countries-Bangladesh,Bhutan,India,Myanmar,Nepal,Srilanka and Thailand-alldependent on Bay of Bengal.Till now Myanmar has not confirmed its participation because of ongoing internal conflict of the country. Because of that Both India and Bangladesh are suffering from the misery of people of that country. Sources told that for the first time BIMSTEC Leaders will meet in person since 2018.The Foreign Ministers meeting may finalise the draft vision for the upcoming summit to define path towards building a sustainable ,prosperous ,inclusive ,resilient and robust and open BIMSTEC.
Sources said," the meeting may discuss of creating crisis response mechanism to coordinate for different 'contingencies'.Food, public health, energy,financial security as well as trade and economic cooperation will be at the core of discussion.The meeting may consider establishing digital payments systemand trade settlements as well as strengthening cooperaion in cyber security and prevention of transnational crimes.
