Bangladesh are all but out of the ongoing edition of the ICC T20 World Cup after they suffered a massive 50-run defeat to India during their second Super Eight Group 1 match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers, who needed nothing but a win to stay alive in the tournament after they lost their opening Super Eight game to Australia on Friday, could make only 146-8 while chasing a target of 197 runs in the do-or-die contest.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto made the highest 40 off 32 balls while Rishad Hossain made a late cameo of 24 off 10 balls but the innings only reduced the margin of defeat.
Earlier, Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten 50 off 27 balls and a couple of thirties by Virat Kohli (37), Rishabh Pant (36) and Shivam Dube (34) powered them to 196-5 in their 20 overs after Bangladesh won the toss and sent the opponents to bat first in the day game in Antigua.
The win also helped India move to the top position in Group 1 with four points from two matches and their place in the semifinal is all but confirmed.
Bangladesh now have only a mathematical chance to qualify for the last four but if Australia beat Afghanistan in the next group match (scheduled today), both Bangladesh and Afghanistan will be out of all contention of reaching the last four.
Chasing a massive target, Bangladesh’s innings never got any momentum as they lost Liton Das (13) in the fifth over to Hardik before Tanzid Hasan Tamim (29) became Kuldeep Yadav’s first of three scalps of the game.
Kuldeep then removed Tawhid Hridoy (four) and Shakib Al Hasan (11) in quick succession before Jasprit Bumrah removed Najmul and Rishad while Arshdeep Singh dismissed Jaker Ali (one) in between Bumrah’s wickets.
Arshdeep then took the wicket of Mahmudullah (13) in the penultimate delivery to confirm their big win in the contest.
Earlier, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Rishad took two wickets each but it couldn’t deny India for posting a colossal total. The Tigers, who brought in Jaker in place of pacer Taskin Ahmed, soon found their backs against the wall as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli put up 39 runs within the fourth over before Shakib broke the stand by removing the Indian skipper for 23.
It was Shakib’s 50th scalp in the T20 World Cup – the first bowler to achieve the milestone in the tournament history.
Kohli, who struggled with the bat in the tournament as he made only 29 runs in four innings before this match, showed some glimpses of returning to form but his innings was cut short by Tanzim, who bowled him after the batter made 37 off 28 balls.
Suryakumar Yadav, who struck a sensational fifty in their last game against Afghanistan, smashed Tanzim (2-32) a big six during the first ball he faced before the pacer came back strongly by removing the batter in the next ball.
However, Rishabh Pant looked solid at the crease as he hit Bangladeshi bowlers all parts of the ground to make 36 off 23 balls before he became Rishad’s first dismissal in the match.
India were 108-4 in 12th over and Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube (34 off 24 balls) then shared a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket to take India’s score over the 150-run mark.
Dube was dismissed by Rishad (2-43) but Hardik smashed four fours and three sixes for his third fifty in this format to guide India to post their highest total in the ongoing edition.
Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in their last Super Eight game in St Vincent on Tuesday.
