Bangladesh’s vice-captain Taskin Ahmed said on Friday that they need to play extraordinarily well against India in order to keep their semifinal hopes alive in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup.
It will be a do-or-die game for Bangladesh against India if they want to keep their hopes alive of reaching the semifinal after they lost their opening Super 8 fixture to Australia.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinal and at the moment, Australia and India have won their opening games. If Bangladesh manage to topple India in their next game, they will be heading for an interesting finish.
“India is one of the best teams in the world and there is no doubt about that. We need to do something extraordinary (to beat them). The message is simple. If we lose the next game, we don’t have any hope of playing in the semifinal. So the next match is vital for us and the margin of error needs to be lesser,” Taskin told reporters ahead of their game against India.
“If we can play our best cricket anything can happen. We still have a chance. The wicket is good here so we are not losing hope. If we can win both games, there is a chance. If there is rain in the next match, we will share the points and we will have a chance in the last game.
“We lost (against Australia) because the total was small and they played aggressively. We are hopeful that if we can win the next game there is an opportunity,” he said.
Taskin said that they had to pay the price of defending the total in the rain against Australia as it became easier for the batsmen after the ball was wet.
“The ball was gripping initially but after the rain, it came to the bat easily. If we bowled first and if we could restrict them by 150 to 160 runs, we could have a chance because initially it was difficult to bat but later when the ball was wet, it came to the bat easily,” he concluded.
The match is scheduled to take place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua at 08:30pm (BST) and will be telecast live on Nagorik TV.
