Two people have died and the toll could rise with some of the 10 injured struggling with critical wounds after a road accident on Dhaka-Barishal highway.
The accident occurred on Tuesday morning when a passenger bus, a car and a battery-run three-wheeler collided with one another at Charprasannadi area of Gopalganj's Muksudpur upazila.
Vehicular movement halted on the section of the highway for hours causing a 5-km tailback, Bhanga Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Sayeed Md Khairul Anam confirmed to reporters.
Many people on the bus were returning to the capital after spending their Eid holiday in Barishal while the car was heading for Barishal city from the district's Moksudpur upazila. The two vehicles had to give some space on the highway when suddenly the three-wheeler appeared on the scene.
Miscalculations led to collisions and the immediate death of two riders of the three-wheeler. One of the deceased has been identified as Rajib Sheikh of Molladi village in Muksudpur upazila, while details of the other is yet to be known.
Doctors are expecting the death count to rise as some have been admitted with life-threatening injuries to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and Rajair Hospital in Madaripur.
The accident severely damaged the car and the three-wheeler, and pushed the bus into a roadside ditch, police officer Abu Sayeed told reporters.
