Sharif Jamil, the Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh, has been elected as a Member of the Executive Committee of the US-based international organization Waterkeeper Alliance.

This decision was unanimously adopted at the Executive Committee Meeting of Waterkeeper Alliance held on Thursday.

Before this, on 7 June, the Council Board of Waterkeeper Alliance had unanimously nominated Sharif Jamil to be a member of the executive committee. Along with him, Bruce Reznick from Los Angeles, USA, and Bruno Monteferri from Peru were also nominated to be members of the Executive Committee.

Bangladeshi environment activist Sharif Jamil began his work as the Buriganga Riverkeeper in 2009, focusing on restoring the river by addressing pollution and encroachment. Since 2015, he has served as the Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh.

Jamil is actively involved in various civic initiatives working for protecting the environment and human rights. As the Member Secretary of Dhoritri Rokhhay Amra (DHORA), he plays a significant role at local, national, regional, and international levels on the issues of environment and climate change.

Waterkeeper Alliance collaborates with over 300 Waterkeeper organizations in 39 countries across 6 continents to monitor and conserve more than 25 million square kilometers of rivers, lakes, and coastal watersheds.

With his new global responsibility, Sharif Jamil expressed his commitment to working intensively on environmental and river conservation issues in South Asia within a global context.

He extended his gratitude to those who nominated and supported him and thanked everyone who provided him with the opportunity to undertake this important work through their cooperation and encouragement.
