Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen remembered

Legendary Indian filmmakers Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen were remembered at the programme “Smriti Satta Bhabishyat” at Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital on Thursday.
In the 1st phase of the event, Satyajit Ray, the famous filmmaker of the subcontinent was remembered. At the beginning of the programme, a 10-minute special documentary on the life and work of Ray was screened. Later, eminent essayist Bidhan Riberu read an essay on the life and work of Satyajit Ray.
In the second part, eminent film director, writer, screenwriter Mrinal Sen was remembered. A special documentary on his life and work organised by Shilpakala Academy was shown. After that, eminent writer Shoibal Chowdhury read the article titled “Biswa Cholochitre Sahashi Abhijatrik”.
Shilpakala Academy has organised the 15-day event to pay tribute to the 62 noted cultural personalities of the country. In “Smriti Satta Bhabishyat”, the life and work of the prominent personalities are discussed.
One of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Satyajit Ray was born in Kolkata on 2 May 1921.
Satyajit Ray, who started his career as a commercial artist, became an independent filmmaker after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir.
Satyajit directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents. Satyajit Ray’s first film, “Pather Panchali” (1955), won eleven international prizes, including the Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.
On the other hand, born on May 14, 1923, in Faridpur (Bangladesh), Mrinal Sen was an Indian film director and screenwriter, who is known for his work primarily in Bengali. Regarded as one of the finest Indian filmmakers, along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Tapan Sinha, Sen played a major role in the new-wave cinema of eastern India.
