The anarchy in the name of waybill is going on in Dhaka’s public transport sector as the efforts to stop excessive rent collection from passengers by introducing an e-ticket system have gone in vain within a year.
The passengers on various routes across the capital Dhaka are being forced to pay extra fares in the name of waybills, even for traveling short distances.
Jatri Kalyan Samity (JKS), a passengers’ welfare nonprofit platform, brought the allegation in a written statement on Tuesday.
The transport owners’ association introduced the e-ticketing system almost a year ago, but it is now absent, leading to an anarchical situation in the sector, alleged the JKS.
Now it is important to stop rampant extortion in the public transport sector and lease buses to drivers on a daily deposit basis to bring discipline on the roads. Additionally, it is imperative to take the initiative to ensure salaries and Eid bonuses of bus drivers and their helpers, it said.
In the statement, the JKS called upon authorities concerned to take effective measures, including ousting unfit vehicles from the city streets, to establish order in Dhaka's public transport.
