The government is contemplating renting out passenger ships, over a hundred years old and built during the British period, by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transportation Corporation for tourism and various social events.
State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury made the remarks following a meeting with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, who is currently visiting Bangladesh. The meeting was held at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday.
Khalid Mahmud said, “We are considering whether the paddle-powered ships can be used for tourism, as they are historic and unique. However, modern travellers are often reluctant to board such slow vessels.”
“We are thinking of using them for tourism or cruise services. Social programmes, corporate events, and other activities could be hosted onboard. This is under consideration,” he added.
The ships – PS Mahsud, PS Lepcha, PS Ostrich, and PS Tarn – were built during the British era and have been docked at Sadarghat for a long time, leading to the deterioration of their equipment.
The visiting IMO secretary-general has assured the resolution of visa complications for Bangladeshi sailors at international seaports.
State Minister Khalid said that Bangladeshi sailors often face difficulties disembarking at various ports worldwide. “In many cases, they are obstructed and cannot leave the ship. We have highlighted these issues. This problem is not unique to our country; sailors in many nations face similar challenges.”
