Bangladesh cricket hit a new rock bottom on Thursday when they lost the second T20I by six runs to hosts USA to suffer a humiliating series defeat at the Prairie View Cricket Complex in Houston.

Chasing a mediocre target of 145 runs, Bangladesh looked well on course to chase down the target as they reached 106-4 in the 15th over with experienced duo Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah were at the crease to help the visitors level the series.

However, Bangladesh witnessed a catastrophic batting collapse in their innings as they lost their remaining six wickets for just 32 runs to get bowled out for 138 runs in 19.3 overs to go 0-2 down in the three-match series.

“Very disappointing for us. We lost wickets in the middle overs, that was the reason why we lost. We didn’t play well, but we have an opportunity to come up with a good plan in the next match. We should change our mindset, it’s not about our skills,” Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said after the match.

USA pacer Ali Khan was the chief wrecker in the Bangladesh innings as he claimed 3-25 in his 3.3 overs while Saurabh Netravalkar and Shadley van Schalkwyk took two wickets each.

Earlier, despite losing both the openers Soumya Sarkar (0) and Tanzid Hasan Tamim (19) early in the run chase, Najmul (36) and Tawhid Hridoy’s (25) 48-run partnership brought Bangladesh’s run chase back on track.

Their innings started to take a wrong turn when Mahmudullah (three) was bowled by van Schalkwyk while Jaker Ali (four) was removed by the same bowler in his next over.

Bangladesh still had hopes to finish the game as they had Shakib at the crease and he was looking good during his innings and the tourists just required 21 runs off the last three overs with four wickets in hand.

However, USA pacer Ali dismissed the Bangladeshi talismanic all-rounder in the first ball of the 18th over after the batter made 30 off 23 balls while he trapped Tanzim Hasan Sakib in the same over to bring a late twist in the contest.

Netravalkar then removed Shoriful Islam in the penultimate over while Ali took the last wicket of Rishad Hossain (nine) to hand Bangladesh yet another shameful defeat in the series.

Ali was named player of the match for his fine bowling spell in the death overs during the Bangladesh innings.

Bangladesh earlier lost the opening match by five wickets at the same venue on Tuesday.

With this win, USA completed their maiden series victory over a Test-playing nation in any format and it happened during their first meeting against Bangladesh.

However, the defeat was Bangladesh’s 100th defeat in this format and they are the only team to achieve the embarrassing feat in world cricket.

Earlier, skipper Monark Patel struck 42 off 38 balls while Aaron Jones and Steven Taylor made 35 and 31 runs respectively as the hosts posted 144-6 in their 20 overs after they were sent into bat first.

For Bangladesh, Shoriful, Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad took two wickets each.
