Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said on Wednesday that they are eyeing to give senior duo Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah a ‘good memory’ as there is a possibility that it can be their last ICC T20 World Cup.
“I’m not aware whether this is their (Shakib and Mahmudullah) last World Cup or not because this is a speculation. We, who are young at age, will certainly want to give them a good memory considering they are playing for so long and giving them a good World Cup is our duty,” Najmul told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
“I would like them to share their experience among the players and help us to improve in the small areas,” he said.
Shakib, who is featuring in the ninth T20I World Cup along with Rohit Sharma, played 36 matches in the showpiece event where he took 47 wickets while he scored 742 runs with an average of 23.93 and a strike rate of 122.44.
Mahmudullah, who missed the last T20 World Cup, played 30 matches so far in the global event and scored 363 runs with an average of 18.15 and a strike rate of 110.67.
Najmul said that he was impressed with the way Mahmudullah made his comeback in the shortest format.
“The team is benefiting from Riyad bhai’s role in the batting line-up, at No 5 or 6. It gives the team an extra advantage of setting up a good total. He is an inspiration for the youngsters. He has shown how to come back from such a tough situation,” said Najmul.
Meanwhile, Hathurusingha echoed the same sentiment regarding the experienced campaigner.
“He (Mahmudullah) has been playing regularly but his comeback, I thought, was strong. Lately, if you see, he's playing his best cricket. He's changed a lot the way he approached batting,” he said.
“He (Mahmudullah) is in good form. His role is going to be batting in the middle order, probably be the enforcer in the middle as well as a finisher role, which he has done remarkably well lately in all formats, in the domestic as well,” he said.
