Bangladesh managed to overcome a massive batting collapse and a late scare from Zimbabwe tail-enders in the run chase to beat the tourists by five runs during the exciting fourth match of the five-match T20I series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Friday.
The Tigers reached 101-0 in the 11th over after Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Soumya Sarkar made 52 and 41 runs respectively but since the fall of Tanzid, they witnessed a heavy batting collapse and lost their 10 wickets for just 42 runs to get dismissed for 143 runs in 19.5 overs.
Bangladesh’s experienced bowling attack of Shakib Al Hasan (4-35), Mustafizur Rahman (3-19) and Taskin Ahmed (2-20) then exhibited a disciplined bowling performance in defending a below-par total although their fielders dropped a few sitters in the innings.
However, Johnathan Campbell’s innings of 31 off 27 balls and some late contributions from the tail-enders took the game to the wire as Zimbabwe required 21 runs in the final two overs.
Mustafizur then bowled a sensational penultimate over where he concluded only seven runs despite being hit for a boundary in the first over and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto’s brilliant work at the boundary line in the last ball made the equation 14 off the final over.
Zimbabwe then took seven runs in the first three balls from Shakib in the final over which included a six by Blessing Muzarabani but the experienced bowler then hit back with two successive wickets to bowl Zimbabwe all out for 138 runs in 19.4 overs.
Wellington Masakadza remained not out on 19 off eight balls.
With this win, Bangladesh took a 4-0 lead in the five-match series and they will be looking to clean sweep Zimbabwe when they play the fifth game on Sunday at the same venue.
Earlier, sent into bat first, inform Tanzid and Soumya, who replaced Liton Das in the contest, gave the hosts a dream start as they managed to put up only the third-century partnership for Bangladesh in the opening stand in the format.
The partnership was finally broken by pacer Luke Jongwe (3-20) in the 12th over and since the dismissal, Bangladesh demonstrated a woeful batting performance by losing wickets at regular intervals.
Soumya was trapped in front by Jongwe while Tawhid Hridoy (12), Shakib (one) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (two) lost their wickets in between nine deliveries to put Bangladesh at back foot straightway.
The lower middle-order and the tail-enders then showcased a pathetic batting performance that allowed Zimbabwe to bounce back strongly in the contest.
However, Zimbabwe batters, once again, failed to take their side to the winning line despite their coming close to finishing the game.
