Voter turnout remained lukewarm at around 62% during the third phase of India’s general elections Tuesday as over half of the country’s gigantic vote casting process came to an end.

The third phase turnout chimes well with the just over 66% voting recorded in the first two phases prompting analysts to point fingers at the absence of strong elections goals among political parties on top of the searing heat wave.

On Tuesday, votes were cast for 93 parliamentary seats in 11 provinces, including incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Gujarat state.

In the first four hours of the day till 11am voter turnout hovered just above 25%, but later picked up. However, as of 5.30pm the turnout was still weak at 61.5%. Vote casting was set to end at 6pm, but officials allowed voting for those who had queued up for hours, reports Hindustan Times.

BJP-ruled Assam province recorded the highest turnout at 75.30% while Maharashtra recorded potentially the lowest turnout of the day at nearly 55%.

West Bengal registered around 73.9% voter turnout, with largely peaceful polling in four constituencies of two Muslim-majority districts.
