The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has not yet taken any action against those who were involved in purchasing biscuits at an exorbitant price using emergency funds as exposed by the Daily Sun.
DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam on 28 April told the media that he ordered the chief executive officer (CEO) of the city corporation to investigate the misuse of public money by purchasing biscuits at Tk3,600 per kg.
The mayor said he gave the official 72 hours to find out the persons behind the scam.
However, DNCC CEO Mir Khairul Alam on Sunday said they formed a committee to look into the matter but there is no timeframe regarding submission of the report.
“A three-member probe committee was formed last week. They were asked to inquire about the anomalies reported in the newspaper and submit their findings as soon as possible,” he said.
The CEO could not say anything about the specific date of the committee formation and the names of its members.
The DNCC usually publishes its office orders on its website but no order regarding the probe committee was seen on the website.
The correspondent also talked to an official of the DNCC secretary’s office, which issues orders, but he could not say anything about the matter.
The Daily Sun on 26 April ran a report titled ‘DNCC officials binge on Tk3,600/kg biscuits using emergency funds’ which exposed how emergency funds were being used for buying biscuits at Tk3,600 per kg by the former DNCC chief executive officer on many occasions.
Around Tk1 lakh was also spent on the farewell ceremony of an official by buying expensive foods, a sari and handbooks as gifts.
The report also revealed how the DNCC officials spent taxpayers’ money on their lunch and breakfast though they get salaries from the city corporation.
