Amid the ongoing heat wave, academic activities of all secondary schools, colleges, madrasas, and vocational institutions in Dhaka, Chuadanga, Jashore, Khulna and Rajshahi districts have been suspended on Monday.

The educational institutions reopened Sunday following days of heat-related closure, although there was no remarkable change in the heat wave condition, worrying the guardians, especially those of primary level students, and spurring the government to review the decision of reopening.

In the wake of the continued extreme heatwave, on Sunday, the Education Ministry issued a new notification of closing educational institutions after consulting with the Health Ministry and Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The notification was signed by MA Khayer, public relations officer of the Education Ministry.

But the educational institutions which have air-conditioning facilities can keep their institutions open.

Further decision in this regard will be published on Monday.

The country’s educational institutions, barring universities, were scheduled to reopen on 21 April after the end of Eid holidays but the closure was extended till 27 April due to a sweltering heat wave suddenly sweeping across the country most likely as a result of climate change.

Classes at all primary, secondary schools and colleges resumed on 28 April (Sunday).

However, the Meteorological Department issued a new warning that the ongoing heat wave could persist for 72 hours more starting Sunday morning, prompting the education ministry to announce another one-day of school and college closures.
