Police confirm Fed Cup semifinal berth

Bangladesh Police FC became the third team to qualify for the semifinals of the ongoing ABG Bashundhara Federation Cup 2023-24 after they beat Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd by 3-0 goals in the third quarterfinal at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj on Tuesday.

 Police’s Uzbek midfielder Javokhir Sokhibov gave his side an early lead in the game during the second minute before local Shah Quazem Kirmane doubled the margin in the eighth minute.

Police’s Uzbek defender Abdullaev Azamat then scored a sensational backheel goal in between two Sheikh Jamal defenders from inside the d-box to give his side a 3-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the game.

Both teams attempted for goals several times but failed to score any in the remaining minutes of the game and it confirmed Police’s semifinal berth in the ongoing meet.

Police will face Mohammedan Sporting Club in the first semifinal at the Shaheed Bir Shreshtha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj on 7 May.

Earlier, holders Mohammedan qualified for the semifinals after beating Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd by 2-1 goals in the first quarterfinal in Gopalganj on 2 April.

Local giants Bashundhara Kings have also already qualified for the semifinals of the tournament after they beat Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society by 2-0 goals in the second quarterfinal on 16 April.

Kings will play against the winners of the fourth quarterfinal between Abahani Limited Dhaka and Fortis Football Club on 14 May in Gopalganj.

The fourth quarterfinal is scheduled on 30 April at the Bashundhara Kings Arena.
