Death toll in Jhalakathi road crash climbs to 14

At least 14 people were killed and several others sustained injuries when a speedy truck hit several vehicles in Gabkhan Bridge area of Jhalakathi Sadar upazila on Wednesday.
The accident took place around 2 pm when the truck ploughed through several vehicles including a three-wheeler and a private car, Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station, told reporters.
He said six people died on the spot and six others succumbed to their injuries at Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital.
Over 20 people sustained injuries in the accident, according to the police officer.
Two more succumbed to their injuries at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMC) where 11 wounded persons were taken after the accident, SBMC Director Saiful Islam.
On information, three firefighting units rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation, police said.
The injured persons were taken to the Jhalakathti Sadar Hospital and Barishal Sher-e Bangla Medical College Hospital.
