2 smugglers held with gold bars weighing 4.63kg from Maheshpur border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained two smugglers with 40 gold bars weighing 4.633 kg from the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah this afternoon.

Based on their intelligence, the BGB's Maheshpur Battalion (58 BGB) received information about a significant gold smuggling operation from Bangladesh to India through the Poliyanpur border of Maheshpur upazila.

A special patrol team from Paliyanpur Border Outpost (BOP) was stationed at Chhaygharia under the captain's directive, read a press release. 

At around 4:30 pm, the patrol team intercepted two individuals on a motorcycle heading towards the border. Upon searching, the BGB team found 40 gold bars concealed in a white cloth wrapped around one of the individuals.

The total weight of the seized gold amounted to 4.633 kg, with an estimated market value of Tk  4 crore 48 lakh.

The arrestees are identified as Md Jasim Uddin, 53, son of late Mokbul Hossain, and Md Humayun Kabir, 40, son of late Aktar Ali.

A case was filed against the duo at the Maheshpur Police Station, and the confiscated gold bars were handed over to the Jhenaidah treasury office for safekeeping.
