BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia spent time with her family members on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr at her residence, Feroza, in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Thursday.

Khaleda’s younger brother Shamim Eskander and his wife Kaniz Fatema among other relatives entered Feroza this morning, according to party sources.

Shamim brought home-cooked food for her sister following instructions from the physicians and she had her lunch with them, they said.

Khaleda's son Tarique Rahman, also the party’s acting chairman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, their daughter Zaima Rahman, late son Arafat Rahman Koko’s wife Sharmila Rahman, and their daughters Zahiya Rahman, and Zafia Rahman spoke to her virtually on the day.

A group of BNP leaders, led by its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, exchanged Eid greetings with Khaleda around 8pm.

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Oli Ahmed also met the BNP chief later on and exchanged Eid greetings with her.

Khaleda was sent to the Old Dhaka Central Jail as a lower court sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on 8 February 2018. Later, she was found guilty and convicted in another corruption case the same year.

Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the government temporarily freed her from jail through an executive order by suspending her sentence on 25 March 2020, with conditions that she would stay at her Gulshan house and would not leave the country. Since then, her release term has been extended every six months following the family's plea.

Khaleda, a 78-year-old former prime minister, has long been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, heart, and eye problems.
