Jagannath University (JnU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Sadeka Halim on Tuesday said the probe body formed to investigate the suicide of Fairuz Sadaf Abantika, a law student of the university, would look into the negligence in handling her complaint she had filed with the proctor’s office.
“I hope the investigation committee will figure out why Abantika's complaint letter was ignored. The previous proctorial team will also be quizzed during the investigation,” she told the media at the condolence meeting organised by the law department.
The vice-chancellor said the probe committee would try to submit its report within seven working days.
Meanwhile, the students of the university staged demonstrations on the campus demanding justice for Abantika who had died by suicide.
They showed a red card to the administration and warned that they would lock up the proctor's office if the probe body did not submit its report within the stipulated time.
During demonstrations, they also demanded the proper implementation of the anti-sexual harassment cell.
Shah Saqib Sobhan, a student of the film and television department, said, “We will lock up the proctor's office within seven days which has been set up ‘for torture’ in the name of the anti-sexual harassment cell.”
Ivan Tahseeb, a student of the mass communication and journalism department, said, “We stand against any oppression in the university. Even if there is an anti-sexual harassment cell here, why is it not functioning? It should be allowed to work independently. Student representatives should be included there.”
On Tuesday, a Cumilla court sent JnU assistant proctor Din Islam to jail on completion of his remand in the case filed over instigating the death by suicide of Abantika.
Another accused, JnU student Raihan Siddique Amman, will be produced before the court on Wednesday after the completion of his two-day remand.
Abantika's mother filed the case stating that Amman harassed her daughter sexually on online platforms as well as offline, while Din Islam abused Abantika verbally when she informed him about the matter.
The body of Abantika was found hanging at her house in Cumilla on 15 March.
