A Dhaka court has sentenced two people to life imprisonment in connection with the killing of Sagira Morshed 34 years ago.

The convicted individuals are Anas Mahmud, also known as Rezwan, and the hired killer Maruf Reza.

Judge Mohammad Ali Hussain of Dhaka's Special Judge's Court-3 delivered the verdict today.

In addition to the life sentences, the court imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 on both convicts, in default of which they would have to serve six more months in prison.

Furthermore, Sagira Morshed's brother-in-law Hasan Ali Chowdhury, his wife Sayedatul Mahmuda, alias Shahin, and one Montu have been acquitted by the court.

On January 16, 2020, the investigating officer of the case, Police Bureau of Investigation inspector Rafiqul Islam, submitted a charge sheet against four individuals in court.

After a long investigation spanning 34 years, the PBI uncovered the motive behind Sagira Morshed's murder and has pressed charges against the four accused.

Sagira Morshed, aged 34, was fatally shot in broad daylight on July 25, 1989, while she was going to Viqarunnisa Noon School on Bailey Road in the capital, riding a rickshaw to pick up her daughter Saharat.
