The ruling Awami League (AL) is gearing up for the conference of expired units and to form and approve incomplete full committees, including all associate and front organs of the party, aiming to make the party more dynamic, united, and mass-oriented, reaching down to the grassroots level.

These decisions were discussed and finalised at a meeting of the AL secretariat held at the party’s central office at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on Monday, presided over by party General Secretary Obaidul Quader.

According to sources from the meeting, it was decided that Obaidul Quader would hold separate meetings with the divisional and district-level presidents and general secretaries of the party. Additionally, he will also convene separate meetings with the central leaders of the party’s associate, front, and fraternal organisations.

Meanwhile, insiders revealed that the ruling party will closely monitor the activities and movements of BNP-Jamaat and their like-minded parties during Ramadan and in the upcoming days. While talking to the media after the meeting, Quader said, “BNP’s public support will continuously decrease if the party stages any political movement during Ramadan.”

At the meeting of secretaries, the ruling party scrutinised and evaluated the recent violence centring on the Supreme Court Bar Association election, AL insiders said.

In this regard, Quader said, “The government is showing ‘zero tolerance’ policy against any types of violence and crimes. The people who create violence are criminals, and the government is determined to bring all culprits to book.”

The AL general secretary said, “I do not know about the Jubo League, Awami League, or Chhatra League. I think a criminal is a criminal. No one will be spared as the prime minister is very strict in this regard.”

AL sources also said that the ruling party is very much concerned about the commodity price hike across the country during Ramadan. The meeting discussed the roles the party and its associate organs can play in monitoring and controlling the essential commodity market alongside the government.

In this regard, Quader said the government is very cautious and trying its best to keep the prices of commodities under control.
The party has also decided not to arrange any iftar party in Ramadan this year as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had directed to distribute iftar and relief items to poor and common people instead of organising iftar parties, said Quader.
