India will commission the newly-inducted MH 60R Seahawk, a naval variant of the American Blackhawk multi-role helicopters meant for anti-submarine warfare, on Wednesday, marking a “pivotal” moment in India’s defence modernisation journey, the Defence Ministry said.
A squadron of the Seahawks, designed for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue operations and medical evacuation, will be commissioned in the Indian Navy as a part of the 24-aircraft government-to-government deal inked with the United States four years ago.
The induction of Seahawks is set to provide “a significant surge” in the Indian Navy’s maritime prowess, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.
The helicopter, also meant for vertical replenishment, has been rigorously tested in Indian atmospheric conditions and is fully integrated into the naval fleet. The advanced weapons, sensors and avionics suite make the Seahawks ideal for the Indian Navy’s maritime security needs, offering enhanced capabilities for both conventional as well as asymmetric threats, according to the statement.
The MH 60R helicopter would extend the operational reach of the Indian Navy and support its sustained naval operations across spectrums and over vast maritime domains.
The Seahawk’s deployment in the IOR would strengthen the Indian Navy’s maritime presence, dissuading potential threats and ensuring a secure and safe environment in this strategically crucial region, said the statement.
