Egypt has sought the cooperation of Bangladesh to restart jute cultivation in Egypt.

Egyptian Ambassador in Dhaka, Omar Mohie Eldin Ahmed Fahmy, met with Bangladesh’s Agriculture Minister Md Abdus Shahid at the secretariat on Wednesday, seeking cooperation to restart jute cultivation in Egypt.

The ambassador said although jute cultivation in Egypt has ceased, the country boasts a thriving jute processing industry.

“Egypt aims to revive jute cultivation with Bangladesh’s assistance in providing varieties, seeds, and technology.”

Md Abdus Shahid said Egypt’s proposal is under process and a joint working committee will be formed in this regard. Egypt and Bangladesh have a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in cotton production.

The minister urged Egypt to utilize it to enhance collaboration in cotton production.

Meanwhile, in another meeting with Canadian Ambassador to Bangladesh Lilly Nicholls, the agriculture minister requested him to buy vegetables including mango, and jackfruit from Bangladesh.

The minister sought Canada’s cooperation in the use of drones in agriculture, agro-processing, post-harvest management, and cold storage.
