Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the internal conflict in Myanmar is affecting Bangladesh.

He expected China's intervention in this regard as the country has a good relationship with Myanmar.

“The internal conflict in Myanmar has had an impact on our bordering area,” Quader told reporters after Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a courtesy call on him at the secretariat in Dhaka.

“Gunshots can often be heard from our border which is spreading panic. The fight is not with us rather it is their internal issue. We expected their [China] intervention in this matter.”

The minister said China can play a role in the Rohingya issue. “Rohingyas are a huge burden for us. We are already in crisis due to global reasons. The aid that used to come for them [Rohingyas] has also decreased a lot. China can play a role in their repatriation – that is what I said [during the meeting].”

He added, “India and China have a conflict of interest in geopolitics. We do not want to intervene in that issue…we will talk about our interests. As a neighbouring country, we should not become the victim of their [Myanmar’s] internal conflicts and that should not affect us.”
