A mentally challenged girl was raped near a school at Mathureshpur union in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira on Tuesday evening.

The accused rapist, Sajib Hossain Sardar, resides at Nijdebpur village in the area, Prodip Kumar, inspector (investigation) of Kaliganj Police Station, told the Daily Sun.

The members of law enforcement agencies have not yet apprehended the accused, he added.

Prodip Kumar said that the victim’s father filed a rape case against the Sajib with the police station on Thursday. “Our drive is on to arrest him,” he said.

The mother of the victim told the Daily Sun that her daughter, 17, with a neighbor went to collect drinking water from a tube well near the school around 6:00 pm on Tuesday.

As her daughter did not return home, she began searching everywhere and found her near the tube well, crying in an abandoned condition.

Asked about the matter, the victim said Sajib, 20, took her beside the tube well and raped her
Sajib threatened the victim with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone, according to the mother, quoting her daughter.

On information, police reached the spot and sent the girl to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for a medical test.

Soma Rani Das, a medical officer at the hospital, stated that they conducted tests on the victim and found evidence consistent with rape.
