Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was sworn in as the Speaker of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad after she was elected as the Speaker for the record fourth consecutive term in the country’s history on Tuesday.

The first session of the 12th National Parliament began around 3 pm with Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque in the chair and Shirin Sharmin was elected as speaker of the house at the beginning of the session.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader proposed Shirin Sharmin’s name as speaker while Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury supported it.  

Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque declared Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury the winner by voice vote as there was no rival candidate in the post.

Later, President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Speaker Shirin Sharmin.
