A woman, Ayesha Akter, came under attack by the rivals while participating in the election campaign of Shahjahan Bhuiyan, an independent candidate in upcoming general elections from Narayanganj-1 constituency (Rupganj).
The incident took place at the sand field of the US-Bangla residential area near Kalatali of Kanchan municipality around 7 pm on Saturday.
Four youths were allegedly involved in the attack on the woman. Two of them promptly fled the scene after the incident. All were reported as followers of Golam Dastagir Gazi, the candidate for the boat symbol and the Textile and Jute minister.
As the two individuals, identified as Shakil (25) and Robin (22), persisted in their altercation with the woman, several people from the nearby election camp of Golam Dastagir Gazi intervened and removed them from the spot.
The injured woman's husband, Abdur Rahman, claimed that the attackers belonged to Golam Dastgir Gazi's alleged terrorist group. "My wife was returning home after participating in the election campaign of the former chairman of Rupganj Upazila Parishad, Shahjahan Bhuiyan."
He said, “Finding my wife alone in the sand field on her way home, the miscreants severely beat her up. It causes scratch on her body. Later, I took her to a local doctor for treatment. Since the incident, Awami League supporters have been threatening not to take legal assistance.”
In response to the incident, Kanchan Municipality Mayor Rafiqul Islam stated, "I've learned about the attack on Ayesha Akhter, a woman worker in Shajahan Bhuiyan's kettle symbol campaign. Initially, I was part of the same campaign. Ayesha Akhter was also involved. Followers of Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, disheartened by low public participation, aim to discourage voting on the January 7 election, fearing defeat."
"For the past 15 years, the majority of Rupganj's residents have suffered under the influence of local MP Golam Dastgir Gazi. He has instilled a reign of terror in the area through his own militant groups. I am urging law enforcement to swiftly apprehend these terrorists upon receiving complaints," he added.
Dipankar Saha, the officer in charge of Rupganj police station, assured that appropriate action will be taken upon receiving complaints.
