A total of 80 traders were fined Tk3,70,500 for selling onions at exorbitant rates during a daylong countrywide drive on Sunday.

A total of 43 teams of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted the drive in 40 districts, according to a press release issued by the directorate this evening.

The DNCRP has assured that they will continue their efforts to curb the unreasonable price hike.

The country’s onion market has become unstable suddenly after India last week extended restrictions on the outbound shipments of onions until 31 March 2024.

On Saturday, the price of onions surged to Tk200 per kg, nearly double the rate observed on Thursday.
