5.6 magnitude earthquake shakes Dhaka, elsewhere

A magnitude of 5.6 earthquake jolted Dhaka and other parts of the country on Saturday morning.

The epicentre of the quake was in Ramganj, Cumilla region, some 86km south-east of BMD Seismic Centre at Agargaon in Dhaka, according to the Met office.

Categorised as “moderate,” the tremor hit at 9:35am, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre was 10km east-northeast of Ramganj upazila in Lakshmipur district and the quake had a depth of 38.5km.

Apart from Dhaka, the tremor was also felt in Cumilla, Chattogram, Chandpur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Rangpur, Chuadanga, Noakhali, Kushtia and elsewhere in the country.

People took to social media to report the quake all across the country.

At least 30 people, including 17 ready-made garment (RMG) workers, were injured while rushing out of buildings in Cumilla and Chandpur districts during the earthquake, reports UNB.
