The Election Commission (EC) on Monday claimed to have found the irregularities that took place in Brahmanbaria-2 and Laxmipur-3 by-polls held on November 5, authentic.

The commission finds evidence of irregularities after an investigation into the allegation of vote rigging in the by-elections of the two parliamentary seats EC Secretary Md Jahangir Alam told newsmen at the commission office in Dhaka this afternoon.

The commission has also decided to file a case against the people involved in the irregularities, the EC Secretary said.

In Brahmanbaria, Shahjahan Alam Saju got 66,314 votes while his closest rival Ziaul Haque Mridha, an independent, got 37,758.

In Laxmipur, Golam Faruk Pinku got 1,20,599 votes, and Jatiya Party's Rakib Hosen got 3,846 votes, the second-highest number of votes.

Amid a widespread allegation of irregularities, Awami League-backed candidates won the by-polls in Brahmanbaria-2 and Laxmipur-3 parliamentary constituencies.

Departmental action will be taken against the polling officers there as per law and the results of both centers will be canceled and the revised results will be gazette again, he added.
