Teachers’ work abstention observed at SUST

Teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Monday observed work abstention under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbhuddo Sikkhak Forum’, demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.

The protesting teachers staged rally and meeting wearing black badges braving the rain on the university campus today.

Terming the vice-chancellor ineligible, the speakers of the rally asked him to leave the university campus by the day.

They also alleged that the vice-chancellor instigated Chhatra League activists against them in a bid to cling to his position.

Jalalabad police station OC Akhtar Hossain said about 70 teachers took part in the rally including Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal. Additional police have been deployed in the campus to avert any untoward situation.

On Sunday, activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League assaulted a group of Shahjalal University teachers who were protesting the vice-chancellor’s corruption and irregularities.

After the attack, Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, noted educationist, a secular figure and a popular science-fiction writer who had played a key role in founding the university 30 years ago, sat in the rain in front of the VC office for several hours in protest.

His wife Prof Yasmeen Haque, another founding figure of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), was among the teachers who the Chhatra League members assaulted.

Hundreds of people came down hard on the ruling party’s student body as soon as the news and photographs of the attack and Prof Zafar Iqbal’s protest came up in social and online media.
