Road crashes claimed 21 lives and injured nearly 39 people daily in the past eight years from 2015 to 2022, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity said in a report on Saturday.
As many as 44,171 road accidents took place and 61,616 people were killed and 1,12,753 others injured during the period, according to the passenger welfare platform.
Jatri Kalyan Samity disclosed the information at a press conference in the capital ahead of the National Road Safety Day, which is set to be observed across the country on Sunday.
The platform’s Secretary General MozammelHoque Chowdhury said there is no visible progress in curbing road crashes though the government had pledged to do so during its election campaign.
He demanded Tk10 lakh in compensation for each family of the deceased and Tk5 lakh for the injured.
As per the rules under the Road Transport Act 2018, families of each deceased will be entitled to compensation of Tk5 lakh and the injured of Tk3 lakh from the road accident victims' financial assistance fund.
