The country’s third tea auction centre is going to be launched in the northern district of Panchagarh on September 2.

Minister for Commerce Tipu Munshi is expected to inaugurate the centre.

All kinds of preparation have already been completed and the auction will be tendered online and for that warehouses have been built, Tea Board officials said.

In the initial stage, its activities will be conducted through a virtual platform before gradually becoming a full-fledged auction centre.

People of Panchagarh district are excited as tea producers in the northern region of Bangladesh will benefit from reduced transportation cost once the auction centre starts operation.

According to the Tea Board, the cultivation of one of the largest export oriented cash crops of Bangladesh started in Panchagarh and later spread across the northern region in the last two decades.

Over 1.77crore kg of tea worth around Tk 260 crore was produced in Panchagarh last year which is 19 percent of the total production of the country. The district ranks second in tea production.

With the development of small- and large-scale tea cultivation, more people are being employed while the economic base of the region is getting stronger.

The first and second tea auction centres in the country are in Chattogram and Moulvibazar’s Sreemangal.
