15-day ban on Hilsa fishing from Sept 25

The government has imposed a ban from September 25 to October 9 on catching, selling and transporting Hilsa in the coastal areas to ensure the safe spawning of this popular fish during its peak breeding period.

The decision came from a views-exchange meeting on hilsa catching and selling of Fisheries and Livestock at the Secretariat on Thursday, UNB reports.

The objective of the restriction is to save the mother hilsa which lays eggs during the period, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Md. Sayedul Haque told reporters after the meeting.

“We’ll provide ration to the fishermen who earn their livelihood by hilsa fishing,” said the minister.

He further said, “Law enforcers have also been asked to take steps against the fishermen if they violate the restriction.”

“We produce 5.48 lakh tonnes of hilsa against its total demand for above 42 lakh tonnes. The fish production increases by one lakh tonnes every year.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chando and other officials concerned were present at the meeting.
