Two female students died after drowning in the lake of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj.

This incident took place on Tuesday (August 1) around 12:30 pm.

The deceased were identified as Taspiya Jahan Ritu (20) and Ananya Hiya (20). Both of them were second year students of the department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management.

Ritu's house is in Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat and Hiya's house is in Khulna Sadar. Both of them used to live in a mess in Gobra area in front of the university. The death of the two students cast a shadow of mourning on the university campus.

It is reported that Ritu came to rescue Hiya while she was drowning in the lake as she did not know how to swim. At one point, both of them drowned in the water.

About half an hour later, when other students noticed, they rescued the two and taken to the Gopalganj Sadar Hospital. There, on duty doctor declared them dead.
