Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rescued 14 fishermen six days after they were abducted while fishing in a canal in the Sundarbans.

RAB also arrested five suspected abductors named Sanjoy Bain, 34, Md Gaus, 30, Manju Ara Begum Moyna, 34, Md Al Amin Hawlader, 28, and Rabiul Hawlader, 33.

A media release signed by Lt. Commander M Sarowar Hussain, commander of RAB-6 special company, said the fishermen were taken at gunpoint while they were fishing in the Taghibagi canal of the Sundarbans on July 23.

Later, they demanded Tk 2 lakh as ransom from the victims’ families and provided a bKash number to send the money. As the abductors threatened to kill the fishermen if the ransom was not paid, the families sent Tk 70, 000 to the number provided and informed RAB.

Teams of RAB-6 conducted separate drives in Mongla and Dakope upazilas to find the fishermen and arrest the abductors.

Eventually the fishermen were all rescued and the said arrests were made while an amount of Tk 40, 000 in cash was also recovered, according to the release.

The arrestees were handed over to Dakope police station and a case was also filed in this connection, added the release.
