A seminar on “Environmental Waste and Processing with Novel Materials” was held at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) campus in Bashundhara on Sunday.
The Department of Environmental Science under the School of Environmental Science and Management of IUB arranged the programme.
The keynote speaker of the seminar was Dr Rabiul Awual, a senior scientist at Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Japan. Dr Awual explained synthesis and characterization of different functionalized nanomaterials.
He also discussed about the efficiency of those materials in removing varieties of environmental contaminants such as Cesium, Selenium, Cobalt etc.
He talked about the different aspects of Fukushima Nuclear Disaster including possibilities of recovery of radioactive Cesium from the nuclear liquid waste. His seminar was particularly important for the participants to learn about future precautions as Bangladesh Government is on the way of implementing a nuclear power plant in Ruppur, Pabna.
Dr Md Abdul Khaleque, Head, Department of Environmental Science, IUB, delivered the introductory remarks while Prof Lutfor Rahman gave the vote of thanks.
The seminar was followed by a lively question-answer session. Members of faculty and management and a good number of students attended the seminar.
