Foreign Minister urges OIC Secy Gen to take concerted efforts to resolve Rohingya crisis

A seven-member delegation led by OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr A K Abdul Momen, MP at the State Guest House Padma in Dhaka today.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister briefed the OIC Secretary General on the steps taken by the Government of Bangladesh, including the arrangements agreed with Myanmar for repatriation of the Rohingya people to Myanmar, said a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Foreign Minister appreciated the support of the brotherly OIC Member countries for the Rohingya case filled in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by The Gambia against Myanmar. Dr. Momen urged the OIC Secretary General to take concerted efforts to resolve Rohingya crisis as well as garner international support for mobilizing funds for the Rohingya case.

The Foreign Minister further expressed great concern about the rising trend of Islamophobia and called for more decisive actions by the OIC to counter Islamophobia.

Dr. Momen also reiterated Bangladesh’s continued support to the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), as a host country.

The OIC Secretary General commended the strong leadership of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to the Rohingya people in Bangladesh on humanitarian ground. He underscored that the Rohingya issue has been a constant item on the agenda of the OIC and opined that safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya people to Myanmar is the viable solution to this problem.

During his five-day official visit to Bangladesh, the OIC Secretary General is expected to visit the Rohingya Camps in Cox’s Bazar.

He will pay courtesy call on the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on 28 May 2023. As the Chancellor of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), OIC Secretary General will attend the 35th Convocation of IUT on 30 May 2023.
