New generation journos should know the contributions of their ancestors

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar said a lot of notable persons of greater Mymensingh played a leading role in the development of journalism since the British period and the new generation journalists should know about their life and contributions.

“From British period, Pakistan period to post Liberation War Bangladesh, the role of Mymensingh’s journalists in popularising journalism and establishing the dignity of journalism profession is remarkable. The new generation journalists must know about it,” the minister said while addressing a memorial meeting for legendary journalists of six districts of greater Mymensingh, once the biggest district of British India, as the chief guest at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Monday.

Journalists of Sherpur, Tangail, Netrokona, Kishoreganj, Mymensingh and Jamalpur working in different media outlets recalled the memory of deceased journalists and cut a 236-pound cake to celebrate the 236th anniversary of the establishment of Mymensingh district in the programme organised by Greater Mymensingh Journalists’ Association.

Late journalists Abul Kalam Shamsuddin, Abul Mansur Ahmad, Jatiya Press Club founder Mujibur Rahman Khan, Khondkar Abdul Hamid, Syed Nuruddin, Mahbub Anam, Hasan Hafizur Rahman, Syed Atiqullah, AM Mofazzal, Mir Nurul Islam, Ataus Samad, Rahat Khan, Asaf Uddaula, Bazlur Rahman, Arunabh Sarkar, Fakir Ashraf, Mahfuz Siddiqui, Abdul Awal Khan, Rafiq Azad, Syed Mohammad Shahjahan, Ashraf Ali, Shafiul Haque, Abu Qaiser and Musharraf Karim were remembered in the event.

Contributions of Shamsul Anwar Manik, Amanullah Kabir, Sazzad Qadir, Shahnoor Khan, Farhad Khan, Harunur Rashid Khan, Syed Lutful Haque, AKM Ruhul Amin, Syed Fahim Muneem, Shafiqul Islam Yunus, Badiuzzaman, Gulshan Akhtar, Mir Mohiuddin Sohan, Raja Siraj, Dipu Hasan, Shamim Mashreki, Obaidul Gani Chandan and Juton Chowdhury were also recalled in the programme.

The association’s general secretary Uday Hakim anchored the programme with its president Molla Jalal in the chair.

State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid MP, Awami League’s cultural affairs secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil MP, former secretary Dr Samad Farooq, journalist leader Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Shawkat Mahmud, acting president of Jatiya Press Club poet Hasan Hafiz, managing director of Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust Subhash Chandra Badal, former president of Dhaka Union of Journalists Quddus Afrad, vice chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University Lutful Hasan, deputy attorney general Shah Md Ashraful Haque George, senior journalist Yusuf Sharif and Faujus Saleheen also addressed the programme.
