World Down Syndrome Day observed

The 18th World Down Syndrome Day 2023 is observed through various programmes for the 10th time in Bangladesh.

21st March is World Down Syndrome Day. This year the slogan of World Down Syndrome Day is “With Us Not For Us”.

To observe the day, a discussion programme was held at the United International University highlighting the theme of the WDSD 2023.

Speakers at the discussion emphasized on coordinating academia, government and private sectors to improve the quality of life of people with Down syndrome.

Speaking as chief guest Prof. Dr. Abul Bashar Md Khurshid Alam, Director General of Health Services highlighted various disability-friendly activities of the current government.

He mentioned the various important steps taken by the government to ensure socio-economic development and health care services for people with special needs. 

Prof. Dr. Abul Kasem Mia, Vice-Chancellor of UIU, Brigd General AJM Fazlur Rahman, Executive Director of United Trust, Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of Manusher Jonno Foundation and Prof. Dr Hakim Arif, Director General of International Mother Language Institute were present as special guests in the ceremony.
The inauguration ceremony was chaired by Prof. Dr. Sardar A Naeem, Chairman of Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital.

Earlier, a colourful rally took place starting from the main gate of the university at 10.30 am. 

A special attraction of the World Down Syndrome Day celebration was the inclusive cultural performance with the participation of children and people with Down syndrome. 

Children, teenagers and individuals with Down syndrome showcased their talents through dance, song, and fashion shows
