‘Strengthening existing law a must to control tobacco’

Strengthening tobacco control law is a must to save lives from the harmful effects of tobacco and tobacco related products, said experts.

 The experts came up with the statement while speaking at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Wednesday.

Development Organisation of the Rural Poor (DORP) arranged the press conference titled “Expectation to mass media to achieve tobacco free Bangladesh before 2040 as declared by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”

“Tobacco and tobacco products consumption area directly affecting the public health as tobacco and the tobacco products are one of the main causes behind critical diseases like cancer,” Prof Dr Md Abdul Aziz, MP from Sirajganj-3 said at the press conference.

Mentioning that it is necessary to amend the tobacco control law immediately to strengthen it, the lawmaker also committed that they will play a strong role in parliament to pass the amendment of the law to save lives of people of the country.

Azhar Ali Talukder, Chairman of the DORP, chaired the programme while Mohammad Zobair Hasan, Deputy Executive Director of the organization, gave presentation at the press conference.

Md Shah Alam, Professor and Former Head of the Department Orthopedic & Spine Surgery Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Dr N I Bhuiyan, Associate Professor & Head in the Department of Urology at Bangladesh Medical College & Hospital, were present as special guests at the programme.
