Journalist assaulted in Gulshan

A police officer physically assaulted a staff reporter of the Bangla daily Kaler Kantho while airing live the fire incident at Gulshan-2 in the capital on Sunday night.

The reporter named Zahirul Islam sustained injuries in his head, chest and face.

The accused police officer is Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Hasib, who is the in-charge of Gulshan Police Outpost.

Following the incident, Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) expressed serious concern over the attack and protested against it.

President of DRU Morsalin Nomani and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel in a written statement demanded immediate punishment for the police officer.

Jahirul said that he was airing facebook live of the fire incident from the opposite direction of the building no. 2 and road no. 104 at Gulshan-2.

Then, the policeman opposed him and at one point he swooped on him. He kicked and punched the reporter several times. The policeman, Hasib, also tried to forcibly take his professional ID card and mobile phone set.
