Lightning kills schoolgirl in Panchagarh

A schoolgirl was killed and her mother and sister were injured by lightning in village Gomostapara under Boda upazila of Panchagarh district this noon, police, hospital and local sources said.

The deceased has been identified as Tanya Akhter, 15, daughter of Salekul Islam of the village and a student of class ten of nearby Chandanbari High School, BSS reports.

The tragic incident occurred when thunderbolt stuck kitchen at their house while Tanya, her sister Sabina Yasmin, 30, and mother Lailey Begum, 50, were engaged in cooking lunch there amid inclement weather.

All of them were injured in the incident and taken to Boda Upazila Health Complex where attending Medical Officer Dr M R Reza declared Tanya dead.

Tanya's mother Lailey Begum and her sister Sabina Yasmin have been undergoing treatment at the Health Complex now.

Officer-in-Charge of Boda Thana Abul Kalam Azad and Chairman of local Chandanbari Union Parishad Moazzem Hossain confirmed the incident.
